Pirates!

December 3, 2008 Uncategorized Comments

Modern piratesSomeone go rally the ninjas… it’s time for a showdown!

Over the weekend, around 29 pirate vessels attempted to hijack the American-operated M/S Nautica while it passed through the waters between Yemen and Somalia. The luxury liner was carrying about 650 passengers and 400 crew members and was headed to port in my old stomping grounds of Fremantle, Western Australia.

Someone other than the Recording Industry is being attacked by pirates? Shiver me timbers, I didn’t realize that this still occurred.

this week marks the 1 year anniversary of my return to US soil, so i think it makes sense to do a VH1-esque year in review [in a nice little keynote chart... omg, iWork rules my life]

my, what a difference a year makes.

Events.

The event I attended last night was a mashup of hot male models and Australiana.

Highlights from the night: a 100 to 1 m:f ratio, open bar, fashion show (if you consider speedos fashion, that is) and a party-goer who at my request dropped trou in the midst of the party and modeled a pair of underwear from the gift bag…

For those two hours, all was right in the world.

it’s no secret that i have a love/hate relationship with new york; consequently, my local friends are always pointing out all the fabulous things that only nyc can offer – which carries as much weight as a compliment from my mom… what does interest me, however, is australia’s list of the top 20 reasons to love nyc:

1. 5th ave
2. late night with conan
3. staten island ferry
4. central park zoo
5. msg
6. central park
7. columbus circle
8. macy’s
9. bkln bridge
10. century 21
11. broadway
12. mlb
13. bkln botanical gardens
14. jimmy’s corner
15. mccarren pool
16. peter lugar steakhouse
17. tiffany & co
18. jersey gardens outlet mall
19. plaza hotel
20. top of the rock

now i understand that this is one person’s opinion, but as a current new yorker and a former resident of perth, i’ve had the privilege of entertaining more than a few aussies in nyc and i would argue that their top five are:

1. our worthless dollar
2. quality mexican food (settle down! i realize that nyc doesn’t offer the best mexican fare, but when compared to australia, where they use salsa and marinara sauce interchangeably, it is pretty damn good…)
3. bars equipped for beer pong
4. these guys
5. KVANG – obviously…

housing…

i am sympathetic to the plight of the homeless (particularly after enduring multiple evictions), so i was impressed to see that my old home down under is donating $100,000 to help.

to raise awareness, mission australia set up some 250 cardboard boxes on sydney’s bondi beach – a guerrilla marketing mistake? after seeing these images, i want to know where i sign up to be homeless in sydney.

i’m just sayin’, it seems frivolous to spend more than half of my income for views of the cerulean waters of the east river when i could be gazing at this for free.

anyway, click through to http://www.housesforthehomeless.com.au and they’ll donate a dollar to mission australia.
